Emotions run high as community supports health care heroes with honor walk | Eye On Eau Claire

On Thursday, hundreds paid tribute to the health care workers whose lives were turned upside down with the announced closures of HSHS Hospitals in the Chippewa Valley.

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) – On Thursday, hundreds paid tribute to the health care workers whose lives were turned upside down with the announced closures of HSHS Hospitals in the Chippewa Valley.

It was an emotional day outside Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire as dozens of health care workers walked hand in hand.

“It’s very emotional for all of them. You can see in people’s faces those standing on the watching side and those walking down. A lot of tears,” said Nancy Yost, a community member.

EMS personnel and community members lined sidewalks and applauded in support of each health care hero impacted by the upcoming HSHS hospital closures.

“What a beautiful thing this is that the community came together to honor these health care workers. They need to see this, they need to feel it,” said Tracy Longsdorf, another community member.

Several heath care workers and residents reminisced on their fondest memories at Sacred Heart.

“Walking every day, I always loved that,” said Donna Held, a Sacred Heart Healthcare worker.

“We’ve had both of our girls at this hospital so it just remains a very special place for us,” said Madeline Roselius, a community member.

Many still remain in shock.

“It’s just such a great loss. It’s very disheartening,” said Yost.

“It’s been tough being at the hospital seeing things slowly going away. Fewer patients to take care of,” said Held.

But with heavy hearts, the residents and workers say they remain hopeful for blue skies in the future.

“You need to find the silver linings. Something good will come from this. It may be really hard but have faith, but there’s something in the future for you,” said Yost.

“It’s been a wonderful experience. I know God and he has a good plan. This did happen, so we know there will be good things in the future,” said Held.

An honor walk for St. Joseph’s hospital health care workers in Chippewa Falls will be held at noon on Friday.

Both Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s closed Friday.
