NS news: Health-care workers voice struggles

Frontline workers were front and center at a legislative standing committee about health, describing the struggles they confront daily in Nova Scotia’s health-care system.

Among the five witnesses present were Nova Scotia Nurses Union, Nova Scotia Paramedics Union, and Doctors Nova Scotia, all of whom said the province’s medical system is facing a lot of pressure as it struggles to attract and retain health care workers.

The president of the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union told MLAs that the vacancy rate was 16.5 per cent which is leading to hundreds of thousands of overtime.

The personal care company has been sold to Waud Capital, a Chicago-based middle-market private equity firm. Senior Helpers declined to disclose the transaction purchasing price.

The wheels for the acquisition began turning following Advocate Aurora’s merger with Atrium Health in 2022, Senior Helpers CEO Peter Ross told Home Health Care News.

Health-care workers vote to end strike at Ten Ten Sinclair

A strike at a facility for people with disabilities is now officially over.

Workers at Ten Ten Sinclair, a non-profit program which oversees 100 clients at seven facilities, voted 97 per cent to accept a new six-year deal.

“Front-line health-care support workers at Ten Ten Sinclair stood up and demanded fair wage increases and won,” said Gina McKay, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Manitoba, in a news release.

Staff have been without a new contract for four years.
